Duties

We are looking for a Commercial Lines Underwriter Trainee to join our team in our Leawood, KS office. 

In this position you will be responsible for the following duties:

• Evaluates property & casualty insurance applications to determine the risk involved: assists in deciding to accept or reject the application; assists in determining appropriate premium.

• Interacts with and learns the role of other groups (marketing, loss control, claims, administration, etc.)

• Assists in determining the acceptability, conditions and pricing of specific property & casualty insurance risks and associated coverage.

• Maintains familiarity with the products, services, priorities and target markets in the property & casualty line of business or insurance segment.

• Maintains familiarity with the loss experience and business conditions of key accounts as well as loss trends and any major legal or economic factors affecting the property & casualty line of business.

• Communicates effectively with colleagues in underwriting, marketing and all support areas in order to meet the property & casualty insurance needs of customers.

• May accompany senior underwriter or marketing representative on appointments in assigned territory.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will have:

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

• Internal candidates may be considered for Underwriter I title based on PHLY and industry experience. 

• Ability to establish and build healthy working relationships and partnerships with clients, vendors, and peers

• Basic knowledge of insurance products

• Analytical and problem solving mindset

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Detail-oriented and interested in learning the insurance field

• Ability to work in a fast paced environment
