Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Adjust new and existing liability claims according to department guidelines
  • Determine coverage, liability and damages
  • Meet with insureds, claimants, and witnesses and conduct on site investigations
  • Reserve and document the file
  • Follow reporting and Special Accounts handling requirements
  • Meet with insureds and agents to review claim status
  • Draft reservation of rights or coverage declinations letters when appropriate
  • Handle general liability claims appropriate to expertise level
  • Learn general liability and contract law and/or handling cases in litigation

Senior Adjuster: (including above duties)

  • Understand general liability tort and contract law
  • Handle own independent analysis of coverage in various types of liability policies and proactively manage cases in litigation
  • Share technical expertise with others
  • Handle litigation and coverage cases appropriate to expertise level

Qualifications / Experience:

Claims Trainee

  • 4 year college degree or equivalent experience, involving customer service and communication skills or in insurance
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong customer service and people skills
  • Ability to work well independently and with others
  • Excellent organizational skills to prioritize assignments and manage workflow
  • Computer knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Good critical thinking skills and a drive to know “why”
  • Self-starter and initiative to respond appropriately in an environment of constant change
  • Possess Hawaii Driver’s License with clean abstract
  • Able to interpret policy language and determine applicability of insurance coverage for various policies

Liability Claims Adjuster I (including above requirements):

  • Minimum 1 year of claims adjusting experience, not necessarily in liability, preferably in Hawaii

Liability Claims Adjuster II (including above requirements)

  • Minimum 2 years of claims adjusting experience, not necessarily in liability, preferably in Hawaii

Adjuster III (including above requirements)

  • Minimum 3 years of claims adjusting experience, preferably in liability, preferably in Hawaii
  • Ability to handle some serious losses and has working knowledge of general liability

Adjuster IV (including above requirements)

  • Minimum 4 years of claims adjusting experience, partially in liability, preferably in Hawaii
  • Ability to handle some serious exposures and/or some cases in litigation

Senior Adjuster I (including above requirements)

  • Minimum 5 years of claims adjusting experience in liability, preferably in Hawaii
  • Ability to handle claims requiring specialized experience such as: complex coverage issues, cases in litigation, arbitration or mediation, construction defects, large property damage claims, and/or serious exposures

Additional Qualifications Preferred:

  • Type 35+ wpm
  • Current Hawaii State adjuster’s license

Special Circumstances:

  • Periodic overtime and travel off island may be required

Salary:

$52,600 to $93,700
